Mattress Disposal in California: Rules, Recycling & Pickup Options

California is actually one of the easiest states in the country to get rid of a mattress, and almost nobody knows it. You already paid for its recycling when you bought it: that recycling fee on your receipt funds a statewide program that takes mattresses back for free. The problem was never the options. The problem is a queen mattress weighs 60 to 100 pounds, doesn't bend, doesn't fit in a sedan, and fights you on every staircase. Here's every legal way to get rid of a mattress or box spring in the San Gabriel Valley, and where each one makes sense.

In this guide

The Free Program: Bye Bye Mattress

California's Mattress Recycling Council runs the Bye Bye Mattress program, funded by the recycling fee collected on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. Participating collection sites and events take used mattresses at no charge, and the units get broken down for real recycling: steel springs to scrap, foam to carpet padding, wood to fuel or mulch.

The fine print that matters: sites set their own hours and condition rules (badly soiled or bedbug-infested mattresses are commonly refused), and you have to get the mattress there yourself. If you've got a truck and a helper, this is your zero-dollar answer. Check the Bye Bye Mattress site for the nearest drop-off location.

Buying New? The Retailer Take-Back Rule

Here's the one almost everyone misses: in California, when a retailer delivers a new mattress to your home, they're required to offer to take your old one back. The whole swap happens in one doorway moment, which is the least effort you'll ever spend on mattress disposal.

Two catches. You usually need to request it when you order, not when the truck shows up, and some delivery crews will refuse a mattress in bad condition. If you're buying new anyway, always ask. It's the best deal on this page.

Replacing the whole bedroom set? That's where a hauler beats the piecemeal options: mattress, box spring, frame, dresser, and the old TV go in one load, one price. See our furniture removal options guide.

City Bulky Item Pickup

Most SGV cities' trash haulers include a few bulky item pickups per year, and mattresses qualify. You schedule ahead, get the mattress to the curb yourself, and it rides off on the scheduled day. Fine for one manageable twin. Less fine for a king coming down from upstairs, or when the HOA is already leaving notes. The mechanics are covered in our Glendora bulky item pickup guide.

When Hauling Is the Right Call

Every option above requires you to move the mattress yourself or wait on someone else's schedule. Hiring a junk removal crew is the option where neither is true. We come to the bedroom, carry it down whatever staircase it's hiding behind, and it's gone the same day when the route allows. Mattresses and box springs we haul go to recycling where facilities accept them, so the green outcome doesn't depend on you owning a pickup truck.

It makes the most sense when the mattress isn't alone: a guest room refresh, a move-out, a whole-home cleanout, or that garage where two old mattresses have been leaning against the wall since 2022. Pricing is by trailer space, quoted firm before we touch anything; the logic's in our cost guide.

What Not to Do With a Mattress

Don't put it in or next to a dumpster. Dumpster diving for mattresses is how bedbugs commute, and property managers prosecute dumping. Don't leave it on the curb without a scheduled pickup; an unscheduled mattress is illegal dumping, fines in LA County run into the hundreds, and mattresses have a way of multiplying once one appears. And don't burn it, bury it, or donate it dirty. Charities almost universally decline used mattresses for hygiene rules, so donation is rarely a real option even for clean ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mattress recycling really free in California?

Drop-off is free at participating Bye Bye Mattress collection sites, funded by the recycling fee you paid at purchase. You handle the transport, and sites can refuse badly soiled or infested units.

Do retailers have to take my old mattress?

When a California retailer delivers a new mattress, they're required to offer take-back of your old one. Ask when you order so the delivery crew comes prepared.

Can I put a mattress in the dumpster or on the curb?

Not in a dumpster, and only on the curb with a scheduled bulky item pickup. An unscheduled curb mattress is illegal dumping and fines are steep.

How fast can you pick up a mattress?

Often same-day when the route allows. Text a photo to (626) 605-1930 and we'll send back a ballpark.
