When the junk removal truck pulls away from your house, it's easy to assume everything is heading straight to the landfill. But responsible junk removal companies don't work that way — and there are real environmental and economic reasons to sort and divert as much as possible.
Here's what actually happens to your stuff after JunkFit Hauling picks it up.
The Sorting Process
After a pickup, our crew sorts items into several categories:
- Donatable goods — Furniture, appliances, clothing, and household items in usable condition go to local donation centers.
- Recyclable materials — Metals, cardboard, electronics, and certain plastics go to recycling facilities.
- Construction materials — Concrete, wood, and drywall go to C&D recycling facilities where they're processed for reuse.
- Landfill items — Broken, contaminated, or non-recyclable items go to a licensed landfill as a last resort.
What Gets Donated?
You'd be surprised how much of what people throw away still has life in it. Items we commonly route to donation:
- Couches and chairs in decent condition (no major stains or structural damage)
- Working appliances — microwaves, toasters, blenders, coffee makers
- Dressers, tables, desks, and bookshelves
- Clothing and shoes in wearable condition
- Toys, books, and kitchenware
We work with Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other local organizations in the San Gabriel Valley. When your old couch ends up in a family's first apartment instead of a landfill, that's a win for everyone.
By the numbers: Nationally, about 30% of what ends up in landfills could have been recycled or donated. JunkFit aims to divert as much as possible from every load we pick up.
What Gets Recycled?
Different materials follow different recycling paths:
Metals
Scrap metal — old appliances, bed frames, shelving, tools, and automotive parts — goes to metal recycling facilities. Steel and aluminum are infinitely recyclable and have real market value. This is one of the easiest materials to divert from landfill.
Electronics (E-Waste)
California has strict e-waste recycling laws. TVs, computers, monitors, and other electronics contain valuable materials like copper, gold, and rare earth metals, as well as hazardous substances like lead and mercury. These go to certified e-waste recyclers who extract usable materials and properly handle the rest.
Concrete, Asphalt, and Brick
These heavy materials are crushed and processed into aggregate for road construction and landscaping. Instead of taking up space in a landfill, your old patio becomes the base layer of a new road.
Wood and Lumber
Clean, untreated wood can be chipped for mulch, composted, or used as biomass fuel. Treated wood has more limited recycling options but is still diverted from landfill when possible.
Cardboard and Paper
Standard recyclable materials that go through the regular recycling stream.
What Goes to the Landfill?
Some items genuinely can't be recycled or donated in their current condition:
- Mattresses that are heavily stained, infested, or water-damaged (clean mattresses can sometimes be recycled)
- Upholstered furniture that's moldy or structurally broken
- Mixed materials that can't be separated economically
- Certain types of plastic and foam
- Items contaminated with hazardous materials
Even for landfill-bound items, we use licensed facilities that comply with LA County environmental regulations, including methane capture and leachate management systems.
Why It Matters
Landfill space in Southern California is finite. The Puente Hills Landfill — once the largest in the country — closed in 2013. Remaining facilities are filling up, and new ones are nearly impossible to permit. Every item diverted to recycling or donation extends the life of existing landfills and reduces the environmental impact of waste disposal.
For customers, choosing a junk removal company that prioritizes diversion means your cleanout has a smaller environmental footprint. It's the same price to you whether we landfill everything or sort and recycle — so we sort and recycle.
JunkFit Hauling is committed to responsible disposal. We donate usable items, recycle what we can, and landfill only what we must. When you hire us, you're choosing a company that cares about where your stuff ends up. Book your pickup today.
The Bottom Line
Your junk doesn't all end up in the same place. Donatable items go to local charities, metals and electronics go to recyclers, construction materials get processed into new products, and only non-recyclable items go to the landfill. Responsible junk removal is better for the community, better for the environment, and doesn't cost you a penny more.
