You booked a junk removal appointment and you're ready to get rid of everything. But before the truck shows up, it's worth knowing that there are certain items junk removal companies legally can't put on the truck — no matter how much you want them gone.
This isn't about being difficult. These restrictions exist because of safety regulations, environmental laws, and disposal facility rules. Here's what most junk removal companies (including JunkFit) can't take, and what to do with those items instead.
Hazardous Materials
This is the biggest category of restricted items. Hazardous waste requires special handling and can't go in a standard junk removal truck or a regular landfill.
- Paint — Oil-based paint is hazardous. Latex paint can be dried out and thrown in regular trash (mix in cat litter and let it harden).
- Chemicals — Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, solvents, and cleaning agents with warning labels.
- Automotive fluids — Motor oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, and gasoline.
- Propane tanks — Even empty ones. The residual gas makes them a fire risk in a truck.
- Batteries — Car batteries and lithium batteries require special recycling. Regular alkaline batteries are usually fine.
Where to take hazardous waste in LA County: The LA County Dept. of Public Works runs free household hazardous waste collection events. Visit CleanLA.com or call 1-888-CLEAN-LA for the next event near you.
Medical and Biological Waste
Needles, syringes, medications, and medical devices fall under biohazard regulations. Junk removal crews aren't licensed to handle these materials.
- Sharps — Needles and syringes go in approved sharps containers. Many pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens) accept them for free.
- Medications — Don't flush them. Use a drug take-back location — the Glendora Police Department lobby has a drop box.
Certain Electronics
Most electronics are fine — TVs, computers, monitors, printers. But some items have specific disposal requirements:
- CRT monitors/TVs — These contain lead. Many junk removal companies will still take them, but some won't due to recycling costs. JunkFit takes CRTs.
- Refrigerators and AC units — These contain refrigerants that must be properly recovered. JunkFit can remove these — we handle the refrigerant compliance.
Ammunition and Weapons
Firearms, ammunition, and explosives (including old fireworks) can't go in a junk removal truck. Contact your local police department for safe surrender or disposal options.
Asbestos-Containing Materials
If you're cleaning out an older home (pre-1980), some materials may contain asbestos — old floor tiles, pipe insulation, popcorn ceiling texture, and some siding. These require licensed asbestos abatement contractors. If you're not sure whether something contains asbestos, don't disturb it until you've had it tested.
What We CAN Take (That Surprises People)
The restricted list is shorter than most people think. Here's what JunkFit does take that customers often assume we won't:
- Mattresses and box springs (any condition)
- Hot tubs (we demo and haul)
- Concrete and dirt (up to reasonable amounts)
- Appliances including refrigerators and washers
- Construction debris — drywall, lumber, roofing
- Yard waste, tree branches, and sod
- Tires (most companies charge extra; we do too, but we take them)
- Electronics, TVs, and computers
When in Doubt, Ask
If you're not sure whether an item can go on the truck, just ask during your estimate. We'd rather know about a tricky item upfront than discover it on removal day. Most of the time, we can take it or point you to the right disposal option.
The Bottom Line
The main things junk removal companies can't take are hazardous chemicals, medical waste, ammunition, and asbestos. Everything else — furniture, appliances, construction debris, electronics, yard waste — is fair game. If you've got a cleanout coming up and you're not sure what qualifies, give JunkFit a call at (626) 605-1930 and we'll walk you through it.
