How to Retire an American Flag Properly (Free Pickup in the SGV)

We find them on almost every big cleanout. Folded in a garage cabinet, draped over a box in the attic, still on the pole but faded to pink and gray. An American flag that served its time, and a homeowner who quietly asks the same question: "What am I supposed to do with this? I can't just throw it away."

In this guide

You're right. You shouldn't. And you don't have to. Here's what proper flag retirement looks like, straight from the U.S. Flag Code, and how our free flag pickup works across the San Gabriel Valley.

What the Flag Code Actually Says

The U.S. Flag Code (Title 4, Section 8) puts it plainly: when a flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. That doesn't mean a backyard fire pit. It means a retirement ceremony, the kind conducted by veterans organizations like the American Legion and VFW, and by Scout troops, where the flag is treated with respect from the moment it's received to the moment it's retired.

Throwing a flag in the trash isn't a crime. But if you've ever flown one, you already know it doesn't feel right. That instinct is the whole reason retirement ceremonies exist.

When Is a Flag Ready for Retirement?

One note before you retire it: lightly worn flags can sometimes be repaired. A seamstress can re-hem a frayed fly end and buy a flag another year or two. If it's past that point, retire it.

Your Options in the San Gabriel Valley

You've got several good ones, and none of them cost a dime.

  1. Veterans organizations. American Legion posts and VFW halls collect worn flags year-round and hold retirement ceremonies, often around Flag Day (June 14) and Veterans Day.
  2. Flag drop boxes. Some city halls, libraries, and police stations around LA County host flag collection boxes. Availability varies by city, so call ahead.
  3. Scout troops. Local Scouting units conduct flag retirement ceremonies as part of their program and welcome donated flags.
  4. Hand it to us. That's the easy one, and it's below.

Learn About Flag Pickup

Why a Junk Removal Company Does This

JunkFit Hauling is veteran owned. Our founder served, and the first time a customer sheepishly handed over a worn flag during a garage cleanout, the answer was obvious. We weren't going to let it ride to the transfer station with the rest of the load, and we never have.

So it became a standing service: any flag, any condition, any job, we take it at no charge and make sure it reaches a dignified retirement through a proper ceremony. If you're not booking junk removal and just have a flag, reach out anyway through our flag retirement page and we'll figure out a pickup that works.

It's a small thing next to hauling a hot tub out of a backyard. It also might be the most important thing we carry all week.

What About Flag Poles, Mounts, and Other Patriotic Items?

Flag poles, brackets, and hardware are regular metal and can go in a normal junk load, where the metal gets scrapped and recycled. Items that carry the flag's image but aren't actual flags, think T-shirts, paper plates, decorations, don't require ceremonial retirement under the Flag Code and can be disposed of normally. When in doubt, ask the crew. And if the flag turns up in the middle of a bigger job, say an estate cleanout, just point it out. We'll set it aside before anything else gets loaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it illegal to throw an American flag in the trash?

It's not a crime, but the U.S. Flag Code says a flag no longer fit for display should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning in a proper ceremony. Most people who fly a flag would rather retire it respectfully, and there are free ways to do that.

How does JunkFit's free flag pickup work?

If we're already doing a junk removal job at your home, hand the crew your worn flag and we take it at no charge. You can also contact us about a pickup even without a junk job. We make sure every flag reaches a proper retirement ceremony.

When should a flag be retired?

When it's torn, badly faded, frayed at the fly end, or otherwise no longer a fitting emblem for display. Small tears can sometimes be repaired, but once a flag looks tired from the street, it's time.

Can nylon and polyester flags be burned like cotton ones?

Synthetic flags release fumes when burned, so many organizations retire them differently, often by respectful cutting and separate disposal or specialized recycling. That's one more reason to hand your flag to a group that retires flags regularly.
